With school back in session across Minnesota, it seemed like the perfect time to share some real-life baby shower inspiration with a very scholarly theme – books! This sweet idea, which came from design and party pro Joanna Gaines, is a wonderful way to celebrate a new baby, setting him or her up for a lifetime love of learning.
A book-themed baby shower is an especially good idea for a second (or fifth) child. After one baby, parents usually have all the clothing and gear they need. Asking guests to bring books will give the family new reading material, and some precious mementos. Guests could even bring an extra book to donate to charity!

In addition to the party details, the invitation included a bookplate, custom stamped for the baby’s library. Guests could fill it out and stick it inside the book they brought to the shower.
The focus element of the party décor was an old card catalog with vintage typewriters and vintage books on top, as well as a balloon arch and a simple bookshelf. Obviously, buying furniture may be cost-prohibitive for most showers, but look for vintage books thrift stores and garage sales.
The hosts kept it simple with a spread of fruits, vegetables, breads and cheese. Guests were then invited to build their own charcuterie board. This is a great way to tailor a menu to different food needs and palates without spending a lot of extra time and money.
Sticking with the book theme, guests were given a small notebook and a bookmark. They also received a pencil with a special feature – a capsule with flower seeds on the end!
