Here in the north, hygge has become a popular concept in recent years. Hygge, pronounced “HOO-gah,” is a Scandinavian term meaning “a quality of coziness that makes a person feel content and comfortable,” according to Merriam-Webster. It has been interpreted as a way to stay warm and cozy during the cold winter months, through soft blankets, comfortable clothes, hot drinks and quality time with friends and loved ones. Not a bad concept, right?
With quite a few weeks of winter left in Minnesota, why not embrace the season and get cozy with family and friends? Read on for tips on throwing your own hygge party, courtesy of Hello Hygge.
Curate the Guest List
A hygge party should be small and intimate. Ideally, all guests should know each other fairly well and be comfortable with everyone there.
Set a Casual Dress Code
Comfort is the goal of a hygge party, so tell your guests to wear what makes them comfortable! Think leggings or sweatpants, wool socks and big cozy sweatshirts. Remind guests to bring their slippers!
Lay out extra pillows, cushions and blankets for additional warmth and coziness.
Use Soft Lighting
Instead of bright overhead lights, turn on table lamps with warm bulbs. Light candles or a fire if you have a fireplace. You could also string twinkle lights or Edison bulbs to create a cozy atmosphere.
Serve Warm and Hearty Food
What foods comfort you on a bad day? Macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, a big pot of stew? Serve your favorite comfort foods to make your guests feel at home. In addition, offer warm drinks like hot toddies or simple hot chocolate. (We rent glasses if you need more mugs!)
Keep the Conversation Light
Avoid the temptation to talk about politics and world problems. Instead, stick to lighter topics. A few lighthearted party games can help keep the hygge in full force.
